Symposium 2025 Highlights

The second FBMH Faculty Symposium on the Future of Teaching and Learning took place on Tuesday 16th December 2025. This full-day event (09:00–16:15) brought together over 100 colleagues from across all three schools within FBMH, and showcased the extraordinary work in teaching and scholarship happening across the faculty. Attendees explored innovative and practical approaches to learning and teaching across the Faculty.

Key Areas and Workshops

Attendees took part in interactive, parallel workshops designed to explore key areas of innovation in teaching:

  • Assessment Workshop
A practical look at assessment strategies and innovations in applied settings.
  • AI-Empowered Teaching
Examples and provocations on using generative AI to enhance learning design and delivery.
  • Gamification Strategies
How game elements can transform engagement and learning outcomes in your units.
  • Enhancing Lab Practicals with Active Learning
Approaches to reinvigorate traditional lab sessions with active, student-centred strategies.
  • Engaging and Supporting Students in Large Group Settings
Explore strategies, tools, and mindsets to promote belonging, engagement, and inclusivity in large lectures and cohorts.
  • Taking Your Units to the Next Level – Canvas Transition and Beyond
Take a practical look at unit design, digital pedagogy, and post-transition enhancement on Canvas.

Participants were able to choose one workshop per session (morning and afternoon). These parallel sessions offered practical tools, collaborative discussion, and examples of best practice directly from their peers.

Poster Showcase

All FBMH staff – academic and PS – were invited to submit a short abstract (maximum of 250 words) for inclusion in our Teaching Innovation Poster Showcase, which highlighted work across the Faculty that is pushing boundaries, solving problems, or supporting student success in creative ways.

Posters showcased:

  • Innovative teaching or assessment approaches
  • Unit or programme redesigns
  • Technology-enhanced learning (e.g. Canvas developments, AI tools)
  • Student engagement strategies
  • Feedback-led improvements or curriculum enhancement

All involved in enhancing teaching, improving processes, or developing new ways to support students or staff, were encouraged to attend and collaborative team submissions were warmly welcomed to create a vibrant, supportive showcase of ideas and experiences from across our community.

Symposium attendees were asked to rank their top three posters based on clarity, purpose, impact, design and insight and the overall top three posters, as voted by attendees were awarded prizes at the event closing address.

The poster showcase was added to the Symposium for the first time this year and proved a huge success, celebrating the innovation, collaboration and dedication driving teaching and learning forward in FBMH.

A complimentary networking lunch was provided, and information desks, stalls, and live demonstrations were available throughout the day in Stopford Building for a day of creativity, collaboration, and community.
